Hello again Blog readers. Well, apologies for my absence these recent weeks, but I've been travelling to the other side of the world and back, so have plenty to talk about. And so to the Speakers' Circle last Monday night. There was a great buzz of chat, with members catching up on news, when I entered the room. Soon after Barry, welcomed everyone to the meeting and outlined the evening's activity. We were handed a sheet of twelve topics, with ten minutes to prepare a talk of between 3 and 4 minutes. Austin was first to take to the floor and set a dazzling standard of polished public speaking skills, with his rendering of 'Let me introduce you to........' Tom, then gave his opinions on whether or not someone is worth £3,000 a week, and left us in no doubt, even about those who earn £300,000 a week! I followed with an attempt to tackle the topic of 'Do you know what makes me crazy' in all of four minutes. I was bound to fail of course. But isn't it instructive, to lose your train of thought, and look at your audience's faces registering puzzlement, confusion etc. and yet be determined to try and do better, and get your act to-gether for the next time?
Other topics were chosen such as - 'my idea of paradise', 'you are what you eat', 'school days are the happiest days of your life', 'the internet is the opiate of the masses' , 'should the City Hospital's A and E be reopened? '
Most entertaining and instructive to hear other's opinions.
Barry brought the evening to a close with the distribution of topic lists for next week's prepared speeches. I selected mine instantly, experiencing sympathy with the topic ' I know that's what I said, but that's not what I meant.'!
Maureen distributed letters about the annual dinner on Monday 7th April at Ormeau Golf Club, with guest speaker Mr Darragh MacIntyre, who is a BBC reporter for TV current affairs. As usual we welcome potential new members and guests to any of our evenings at the location described on this website, and to the annual dinner. Until next week then..................and maybe you might join us? After all, how do you know what you think, until you say it?
