About the Belfast Speakers' Circle
The Belfast Speakers’ Circle is quite a unique organisation.
It began life in 1945, towards the end of the Second World War. It was founded by a group of ‘Fire-watchers’ in Belfast keeping watch for fire-bombs dropped by German planes. During those lonely nights the original members gathered in a circle around a fire to keep warm and told stories to each other. The idea was formed that when the war was over they would form a group or ‘circle’ of people dedicated to the art of public speaking. This was how the Speaker’s Circle was born. It remains unbroken and is still continuing today.
The objectives of the circle are to encourage, promote and foster a high standard of public speaking, give advice and assistance in the preparation and delivery of speeches and provide members with a sympathetic but supportive audience. .
The Belfast Speakers’ Circle does not provide formal teaching but encourages members to learn from each other through listening, practise and formal adjudication.
